this past week i was in georgia visiting my family for thanksgiving, and the 16 hour drive there from minnesota was more than enough ample time in the car.  my sister and i love listening to podcasts like this american life, wait wait don't tell me, and ask me another to pass the hours and this year we added another favorite to our list:  serial.  this is a new podcast supported by this american life that tells a nonfiction story week by week.  the current season is outlining the case of a high school student in maryland who was convicted to life in prison for the murder of his ex-girlfriend in 1999.  the case was almost entirely based on one witness and cell phone records.  how much weight would you put on cell phone records in 1999?  fifteen years later (this podcast is told in real time), the case receives a fresh look with new investigations, interviews, and detailed digging that appears never to have been done by the detectives in the first place.  

i admit when my sister read the description of the podcast to me when we started our drive on a pitch black, cold, early morning in november, i wasn't so sure it was something i wanted to delve into.  i am not a mystery book reader, scary movie watcher {it took me for-ev-er to read/watch the hunger games because i couldn't fathom the idea of reading a book for pleasure where kids kill other kids}, or dateline type of gal at all. but once the sun rose we started listening and were both immediately gripped with such fascination that we binge-listened to the available 9 episodes all the way to kentucky.  i'm not sure that serial is something i'd want to listen to at the dinner table or if i'm out for a walk around the neighborhood, so i think it was actually perfectly suited for an insanely long car ride.  i'm really looking forward to listening to the rest of the season though so i'm sure we'll figure out an appropriate time to listen.  has anyone else been lured into this podcast? or the podcasts of the podcast that pick it apart?

this has absolutely nothing to do with what i'm wearing today (hey, first day back to work in a week) but i knew i wanted to introduce other people to this podcast and have the opportunity to dialogue about it in comments if anyone else has listened, so i hope someone has!  as for what i'm wearing, i just grabbed a blouse i thrifted when i was home in georgia and a coordinating skirt and cardigan.  so easy!

today is bottom day during the we love target link up whitney and i are hosting this week.  i loved seeing everyone wear their favorite target tops yesterday.  i have long admired this skirt on whitney, so much in fact that we did a clothing swap a couple years ago and she let me have it for a week.  i finally found my own on ebay not too long ago.  the shade of the print can look olive in some light, brown in others, so it really lends itself to be paired with so many different colors.  i chose magenta this time around.  head over to along the lines of style to see how whitney wore her skirt and link up if you're wearing a target skirt today, too!

i know i wore a skirt practically this same shade last week but i could barely remember that, so i'm hoping you guys won't really mind or have remembered either.  :)  that skirt was just a stand-in anyway until i could exchange this merona skirt for the correct size.  these booties were a staple in my wardrobe last fall/winter and i wore them a lot with tights but this is my first time wearing them without tights.  i think they look kind of funny, but i'm convinced that it's good to mix things up once in a while even if it takes you out of your comfort zone.  i'm kind of surprised that we're into october and i haven't pulled out the tights box yet, but i know it's coming (friday??).

disappointment / today i wanted to wear another skirt i recently made from the same pattern as this one but it turns out it is too big.  this one turned out so well, so it's a little disappointing to have put all that work into cutting out the pattern pieces and doing the sewing and mailing it to my mom to finish just to find out that it doesn't fit.  i know where i erred, but there isn't much i can do now other than cinch it in at the waist with a belt.  so for now i'm wearing this one that turned out perfectly.  i'm wondering for any sewers out there how you bounce back from projects gone wrong knowing how much work you put into it, especially if there isn't a way to fix it?

also, thank you so much to my trickle of new followers lately, i have definitely noticed and it means so much to me.  it's pretty crazy that i am nearing 100 followers {could it happen today?!} and i would love to do something nice for you when i do reach that mark.  thank you so much for visiting!

i wish i could say i wore these shoes with this outfit all day, but this photo is all lies.  i know, the deception!  i schlepped them to work to change into once i got into the office but they felt a little bit off as i walked around my office in them... they are 1/2 size too big and so i need some heel pads or something.  aren't they lovely, though?  and i noticed that i have quite a few skirts with some mustard yellow in them that these shoes will go wonderfully with.  i'm glad i caught them at a good deal online when i did, especially since they are now sold out {although still available in navy online!}.  i can't wait to see what lela rose's next line of shoes at payless are like!

a couple of my favorite ladies have posed with their cats this week and i have to say, i think outfit photos are 100% better when furry friends are featured.  i love seeing pictures of people's cats!  my cat, who i inherited from my nana, has appeared a couple times on my blog before, but i wrangled her into these shots with me.  she wasn't too into it, probably because she hadn't had dinner yet.  eating comes before snuggling.  say "hi" to ann!  have a good weekend!

i just wore their twin last week, but i couldn't wait to wear these heels any longer.  even though they're a half size too big... i'm in love with them.  i have kleenex jammed in the toe and heel pads in the back (which really aren't doing much), oh the things we do for fashionable footwear!  also, i have to say that this outfit looked a lot different in my mind and i felt a lot better in it, but it looks like a drab pea soup.  maybe because i was originally wearing a different skirt with it.  oh well, what are ya gonna do?  have a good evening!

question:  do olive green & dusty rose "go together?"  i tried on about thirteen different outfits this morning, which sucked up way too much time out of my morning routine, so i finally settled on this so i could get out the door.  really, i just wanted to wear these two donated target stock items that i found at the goodwill this weekend immediately.  i am such a sucker for merona cardigans - the colors, prints, and embellishments - and i love finding them at the goodwill.  to hear about another gem of a gem that i found at the goodwill this weekend, check back tomorrow!!
