the frequency with which i wear these neutral wedges has finally convinced me that i should find another pair of nude wedges.  i don't mind owning similar items if i know i'll wear them both equally as much.  plus, it's nice to have a little variety with ones basics so it doesn't look like you're wearing the same shoes everyday... and i've been wearing these wedges a lot!

out of habit, i have the morning news on when i'm making my lunch, mostly to hear the weather forecast and because the stories aren't as depressing as those featured the evening news.  i'm sure most people will say they don't watch the news because it's all shootings and crime, but even though that's the #1 reason that will get me to change the channel, i've never considered that a good excuse to be uneducated about what's going on locally and nationally.

i found out about the website theSkimm in a magazine i recently read and it has become such an interesting way for me to brush up on national stories that i would otherwise be uninformed about.  each weekday they send an email with quick summaries of major news events that are written in a clear and witty voice, which my sense of humor appreciates.  they also have some really great guides on topics like the syrian crisis or march madness because really, who can fully understand those issues or topics?  i really have enjoyed reading these emails on my breaks at work and wanted to share!

thanks for visiting!

four things friday (2)

old navy popover & scarf & jeans
merona madalena flats {thrifted target stock}

it may not seem like anything special but i felt really good about this outfit.  i've been doing the hanger turn around trick after i wear something for a whole now and that has changed what i reach for in my closest when i get dressed and is definitely helping me wear more of my closet, including this shirt.  i don't think i've ever worn this popover or these flats on the blog and of course the scarf brings it all together!

now... i'm virtually hanging out with brynn on fridays giving four answers to one question - today's is four jobs i have had:

* joann's - a brand new joann fabrics store was built in my city when i was in high school and my mom got a job helping to stock the store, so my sister and i helped to do that as well and then became cashiers that summer.  i LOVE organizing and straightening and putting stuff away, so it was so fun to put the price stickers on the shelves and unload big boxes of merchandise on the shelves of a brand new store!
* americorps - i consider americorps a job because i worked 40 hours a week and received a stipend.  i worked with the metro atlanta branch of the red cross in the disaster services unit.  my four team members and i provided education & training in our communities by teaching first aid & CPR classes, supplying AED machines and first aid kits to schools, and completing monthly service projects.  we also donated a lot of blood and responded to local and national disasters.  local disasters were most commonly house fires and the national disaster i was deployed to was a tornado in daytona beach, florida.  i was there for about a month and it was one of the most profound experiences of my life!  i am a huge supporter of americorps programs and feel so blessed to have been a part of such a life-changing program.  i also completed a second americorps program during grad school that used evidence-based literary interventions to help struggling elementary school readers.

* gap, inc - i worked at a gap after college and then at an old navy after i finished grad school while i was job searching.  i was terrible at getting people to sign up for the store credit cards but i loved working shipment days - unloading the trucks, breaking down the cardboard boxes, putting the merchandise away, dressing mannequins.  i loved it all!  i would seriously consider going back to work at a clothing store part-time if all i could do was stock & straighten.  i love those types of repetitive tasks that bring about a great sense of accomplishment when complete!  i have to say, i was pretty darn good at straightening the denim wall!  :)
* state fair parking attendant - the summer after my second year of grad school i got a job in one of the parking lots at minnesota's annual 12 day state fair.  my pay rate was nothing to offset my grad school tuition (whomp) but i got into the fair for free every day and once the morning rush of attendees arrived and the parking lot was full i got to wander around with my parking lot colleague, a quirky little high school boy, haha.  it was definitely a fun week and a half!

thanks for visiting & have a great weekend!

thankful for: colored tees

j crew factory fine-ribbed tee
ann taylor signature sateen pants
qupid salaya 821 flats
old navy scarf

today i'm expressing my thanks for colored tees - i know, it may sound silly to express fashion gratitude for such a simple, inexpensive piece of knit, but in the last 6 months or so i've come to find out versatile and useful these items are in my closet!  perhaps i subconsciously have taken inspiration from my supervisor with whom i share an office, as she often will wear a solid colored tee and a coordinating scarf and dress pants to work... but hey, that is my kind of outfit!  my only concern is that my supervisor is nearly old enough to be my mom, so i don't want us to wear this same type of outfit on the same day and look like mother daughter twins - but so far that hasn't happened!

here's what i wore today (i'd size down on this particular j crew factory tee in the future as the knit is extra stretchy as you can see where it really bunched up around my arms) and a recap of some other similar looks - i know there aren't too many yet, but i'm sure that will change!  are you a fan of solid colored tees?

dressed up.

ruff hewn blazer {thrifted}   ·   calvin klein skirt {thrifted}
old navy scarf   ·   dexter kylie wedges

i'm really excited to share with you guys that i have been offered a job!  it was one i interviewed for last monday and i got the call last friday that they wanted to hire me.  it all happened so quickly; a part of me was expecting my unemployment to last much longer, but i'm excited about this position (i'll be a social worker in a nursing home).  my orientation isn't until next week, so i have the rest of the week to enjoy a few more days off, have lunch with one of my old coworkers, pull the skirts and tights back out, and hopefully get my hair cut (will that ever happen?!  i need a push!).

this army green blazer i thrifted recently reminded me of the military-style jackets and cargo vests many bloggers own and remix with ease, and i thought it could work for me as a casual blazer to wear on weekends.  this is an example of one way i may wear it to work, but let's be honest... i'm going to enjoy my self-imposed dress code of sweatpants & t-shirts for the rest of the week. :)

grays & navy

old navy striped tee & scarf   ·   self indulgence blazer {thifted}
calvin klein skirt {thrifted}   ·   worthington booties

i think this is one of my favorite outfits i have worn in a while.  i'm not a pattern mixer by any means, but stripes and florals (or similar prints) in the same color scheme makes sense to me and i really liked the effect this tee and scarf had together.  i started out with a camel colored blazer, but liked how the gray seemed to blend better with the navy.

my week has been crazy with tons of new assessments and client visits, so putting together an easy outfit that i feel great in all day like this one is definitely what i have been searching for from my wardrobe this week.  i hope your week is ending on a positive note!
