february 7th {analogic}

j crew factory pencil skirt
merona cardigan & merona mari pumps {both thrifted target stock}

i am not a big j crew shopper.  not that i wouldn't like to be, but in recent years their offerings haven't appealed to me as much as they did say, five years ago, so i just stick with what i can find at the goodwill (one, two, three, four).  pencil skirts notwithstanding, of course.  i love a great pencil skirt in a great print and j crew knows how to do that so well.  i have a goal this year to add more solid colored skirts to my closet as well, so when an extra 40% off sale items promotion presented itself i took time to scour the sales pages and found this skirt came out to be around $20.

i played around at a color scheme designer website i like that allows you to move a dial around the color wheel and come up with monochromatic, complement, triad, tetrad, analogic, and accented analogic color pairings.  don't worry if you don't know what all those terms mean -- when you see it, it makes sense.  i really encourage you to visit that site, i use it a lot when i am trying to come up with different color pairings for outfits.  for this outfit, i was inspired by the accented analogic option with the jade green skirt as the base and orange, cobalt blue, and lime green as accents.  i also drew in the color brown for my tights and shoes.  i left out the lime green, thinking that would be a little too much, but used the blue as an accent with the belt.  i already like the way blue & green look and blue & orange look together, so all three paired together made sense to me.  what do you think?

tuesday (simplicity)

united colors of benneton button-down {thrifted}
handmade (by me) skirt   &mittot;   merona mari heels

i am really excited to share this outfit today because ahh, i made this skirt and i am so proud of it!  i still get such a thrill over being able to say that.  the fabric is likely upholstery fabric but you know i don't shy away from making skirts out of non-skirt fabric.  i like the heavier weight of the fabric and the print really stood out to me as something i would be attracted to in a store-bought skirt.  overall, i'm pretty satisfied with this simplicity pattern that i've made a few skirts from now... the only struggle i have is making the correct size but this one came out perfectly.  thanks for visiting!

friday {copycat}

 merona skirt {ebay}   ·   merona cardigan {thrifted target stock}
merona mari pumps   ·   nicole by nicole miller blazer {thrifted}

copycat / if there were ever a day to wear a skirt you've been lusting after for probably about a year after seeing it on your friend whitney, it should be on a friday! {i've never wanted to add something to my wardrobe more than this skirt & i finally found one recently on ebay!}

tuesday {standby}

eddie bauer button-down   merona skirt
merona mari heels   simply vera wang necklace

standby / please standby for more regular posting on this blog.  my parents are in town visiting right now and so my time has been spent cramming in as much time with them and other family members as i can, sewing up a storm with my mom {we have three projects going right now and are taking a trip to a giant fabric store today}, and, oh yes, still going to work.  this outfit is definitely a standby for work - a printed skirt whose colors lend themselves easily to be matched with simple tops in my closet when time is lacking to come up with anything more creative.  i have a feeling this is going to be a long summer - i hope i can find some different combinations of skirts & tops in my closet to keep it interesting!  i hope you all are doing well!

20 July 2012

let it be friday (the 20th)

if there were ever a day to wear that thrifted NWT ann taylor breezy dot skirt that i'm kind of indifferent about... i think it should be on a friday!  ann & i request your vote on its fate, please!  leave a comment below with your thoughts {i had to remove the poll because it messed up the formatting on my whole blog for some reason, but the overwhelming response was pretty much for me to keep it - i think i will!}

friday!

if there were ever day to wear your favorite skirt & casual denim... it should be on a friday.
happy weekend to you all, thanks for all of the support you have shown to me this week!

friday (!)

merona essential cardigan {thrifted target stock}   loft rose print shell {thrifted}
banana republic skirt {thrifted}   merona mari faux crocodile pumps
this outfit is so me.  i feel obligated to talk about how much i love this skirt whenever i wear it.  it instantly turns a couple pieces of clothes into an outfit.  i think that navy is my go-to neutral and i'm sure one of these days it will surpass my trusty black pencil skirt in number of wears.
i found this loft shell at my second favorite goodwill (yep, they're ranked) on wednesday when i was in that area for a home visit with a client.  there were no sales that day, but when i saw this shell, a banana republic blouse, and an h&m blouse, i snatched all three up.  i used to be really strict with myself and only buy clothing at the GW if it was marked with the correct color tag that was on sale that day, but i knew i would have regretted it if i had left this blouse.  i have a feeling that the same person donated all of the items that i purchased.  it's fun when you hit the thrift stores on the right days!
have a GREAT weekend!

monday (paisley)

 j crew pilar paisley cami {thrifted}   gap cardigan {thrifted}
banana republic skirt {thrifted}
target glitter belt {thrifted target stock}   mari faux crocodile pumps

i've only worn this j crew blouse once since thrifting it last september, so it was time to let it make another appearance.  i didn't really like the pinkish colored cardigan i wore with it last time, but there's an ever so faint mint green and yellow in the print that matched nicely with this pale yellow cardigan.  i will forever sing the praises of this navy banana republic skirt, i can't believe how versatile it is in my closet and how (i think) it looks great with anything.  i feel really great when i put outfits like this together knowing that everything came from the goodwill!

monday (thankful)

mossimo ultrasoft cardigan {thrifted target stock}  merona slacks {thrifted target stock}
target necklace   merona mari faux crocodile pumps

i want to share a resounding thank you for the support many of you left on my post yesterday about my car being broken into.  it was helpful for me to hear other people's stories & realize just how universally random and upsetting this type of situation is.  i did put a call in to my insurance company but my deductible is so high that my renter's insurance won't cover my stolen belongings, and because there is only superficial damage to my car i'm not sure that i want to pursue an appraisal or repair.  a part of me wants to just put this all behind me and hope something like this never happens again but i'll see what my dad thinks (thank goodness for dads!).

i mentioned i was still going to try to enjoy my weekly venture to the goodwill yesterday, and did i ever... the universe must have known i needed a little pick me up because i left with these donated target stock items:

mossimo ultra soft cardigan & mossimo varana shooties
yep, as you can see i'm already wearing the cardigan today - i have a hard time waiting to wear new clothes.  those "shooties" will probably be seen on my feet before the end of the week too.  there were so many of them and were priced at about 85% off of their original target price, what a great find.  i hope your week is off to a good start!
